What is Creativity?

I have a question for you. Are you creative? So many of us believe that creativity is some talent that you either have or don’t. We are all born creative. We need to acknowledge our innate creativity and take actions that can foster creativity in our daily lives.

Those who express their creativity are not an exception to the rule; they prove the rule. Creativity does not belong to the artists, designers, and architects. It belongs to all of us: the scientists, the lawyers, and everyone in between. All of us are born creative, and we don’t even know it. Creativity belongs to all aspects of our lives. We need to foster this approach. You might be more creative than you think! Maybe you are creative in the way you run a meeting or layout your excel spreadsheet, or even in your approach to raising your children.

I believe that creativity isn’t a skill set. It is a mindset, and it is yours!

Creativity is being curious, asking new questions to old problems, looking at a situation from a new vantage point, and being willing to make mistakes searching for the right solution. Being creative is letting go of the result and leaning into the process. It is listening to our gut while working within the parameters of our lives.

Society rewards us as rational taskmasters, going from activity to activity without pondering what we truly need or want. We have become human doers vs. human beings! So many of us feel stuck or asleep at the wheel of habitual patterns. Our technology asks us to move faster and faster 24/7, and we need a break!

Fostering your creativity is the solution, and you have it within yourself. All we need to do is pause and ponder: what in your life truly brings you joy? What was a peak experience in your life? When in your life did you have a hobby or activity that you loved? Once we acknowledge these moments of joy and deep resonance, then we can begin to integrate bits of these activities into our daily lives. Keep your day job and find a balance with these moments and activities that help you dream again. Even a trickle of new curiosity or different activities can balance the daily grind and can start pointing you in the direction of deeper fulfillment and joy. If we can open each day listening to ourselves and looking at life with a sense of curiosity, we can start to live truly.

“Creativity is a Mindset, not a Skill Set.” Listen, Trust & Create!
